I have been waiting months for Windows Defender to remove toolbar.dll. It is
in the c:\program files\toolbar\toolbar.dll. WindowsDefender detects it as
ibis toolbar and says it cleans it, but the dll file never goes anywhere.
Another scan detects it again and again. This has been a spyware around for
a long time. Why cant defender remove this when all the other apps can?

Hello Daniel,

If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck any
BHO's that you don't recºgnize

http://articles.networktechs.com/370-p1.php

The reason that you are having difficulty removing IBIS Toolbar is that it
uses registered .dll files, and using any means other than manual removal or
an uninstaller will likely fail.
In short, any antispyware app will have difficulty removing these types of
infections since they can't unregister these components, only an unistaller
or the user can.

This is a AndyM (e-mail address removed)
or Ron Kinner case beacuse I cannot find any good advice within any forum
without using HijackThis and to be carefully guided.
Get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe
http://computercops.biz/HijackThis.html

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select Scan and Save Log.
Note where you saved the log then send it to him as an attachment. Put
Hijack in the subject so he'll know it's not spªm.

Alternatively you can post it on the Dell Forum ªt:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Put Ron in the subject so he will see it. You do not need to have a Dell to
post but you will need to register.

The Ibis Toolbar uses 4 registered DLLs. The response as to why WD can't
remove the DLL really disturbs me. If Microsoft can design Windows XP,
Microsoft can design software that will unregister DLLs, terminate tasks,
stop and disable services. I am not overjoyed about a product whose
marching orders are run in safe mode. If WD can't do everything in one pass,
I would rather have WD tell the user to re-boot and re-scan to complete the
final cleanup than to leave junk behind.

Pestpatrol, Lavasoft, and most other Spyware removal programs have no
difficulties in removing this.
