Toolbar changes - Please help

I must have done something wrong. I have alway additional command buttons to my toolbars using the standard method. VIEW - TOOLBARS - CUSTOM - drag and place where I want them on the toolbars. Prior to new toolbar settings would always be there, wheather it's a new or a saved document. However recently a dialogue box pops up when I close a document stateing that a "normal" document is already on file, do I wish to save changes - Yes - No. It seems no matter what I enter the toolbar reverts back to the default settings. I could just add a custom toolbar and be done with the hassel, but the default settings have a lot of buttons I don't use and rather than have my whole screen full of toolbars it would just be easier to add some and get rid of some others. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Long term, you want to apply all of your modifications to custom toolbars.
For instance, I have my own Formatting and Standard toolbars (with different
names) that I use instead of the built-in ones. This is because your can
(relatively) easily copy custom toolbars to other templates or documents but
cannot do this with customizations to the built-in ones.

Unless you store them elsewhere (also advisable) changes you make to
toolbars and menus in Word are stored in normal.dot. You should be getting a
question about whether you want to save changes to normal.dot when you make
such changes. If you answer "yes" your changes should be there next time you
start Word.

You indicate that this isn't what is happening. Any chance that a network
administrator is rewriting your normal.dot when you log in?

Hope this helps.
