Folks, I've realized that most of the time the Status bar in Word 97
is useless except for two things--the page number and the total number
of pages in the document. I wonder if it would be possible to create a
substitute for that feature--a continuously upgraded display, appearing
as a button on a toolbar, that would just show the page number and total
number of pages? Then the otherwise useless Status bar, with its stupid
column numbers and line numbers and section numbers and inches from the
top of the page, could be dismissed most of the time.

G'day "Larry" <[email protected]>,

not really. Modeless forms are a partial solution - but pathetic.

Well, it occurs to me that the status bar is a retrogressive part of
Word. Every darn thing about Word is customizable, except the status
bar. Why should it be impossible to remove features from it that we
don't want, and add features we do want?

I'd send this idea to Microsoft Wish, excerpt that Microsoft Wish
doesn't seem to exist anymore. :-(

(Suzanne, did you ever find out what had happened to MS Wish?)

It's a fairly hefty bit of coding, but you could trap the
WindowSelectionChange event: use the information() function to retrieve the
page number and page count, and update your toolbar button. More code than
it's worth, I would say.
