Tool to perform a software inventory BEFORE upgrading the HD

I'm being paranoid about updating my home system, plus I just got asked
what the h-e-double-hockey-sticks was actually located on my system at
work.

Somewhere, I read of an application that will list what you have
installed on your PC. I believe that it was shareware.

Unfortunately, I can't find a reference to it anywhere.

Anyone have any suggestions for a freeware or shareware tool that does
this?
