Tool to copy my WinXP to a new hard disk?

My C: drive is full. I have ordered a new drive to replace it. To make
reinstallation less traumatic, is there software available to make a copy of
the C: drive and to write that copy to the new disk?

If so, does it copy the entire environment to the new disk so that it
becomes a functioning system disk?

Thanks,

Joe

If you bought a retail version [versus OEM] hard drive it probably will come
with software that will let you do that fairly easily such as Maxblast for
Maxtor hard drives and so can Norton Ghost. The link below is to utilities
that are available from major hard drive manufacturers. Also be sure backup
any important data files "just in case" to cdrom/DVD disks. Operating
systems and applications can always be replaced but not your data files.
With XP you can also use "File and Settings Transfer Wizard to backup your
files and settings that are in your user profile but I would not depend on
that alone to backup my important data files. --- Steve

Steve,

Thanks a bunch.

I do keep the machine backed up and will of course do a freash backup before
I tamper with it.

I downloaded Maxblast and another Maxstor utility last night anticipating
the need - but I didn't know that Maxblast would copy the drive!

Maybe this won't take as long as I had feared. As have many others, I've
suffered through reinstalling EVERYTHING too many times.

Regards,

Joe

Sounds like you are all set. I have not used Maxblast in a while but I
assume your new hard drive is fairly large. Thus if possible consider
setting up at least three partitions that would give you three logical
drives for instance and make the system partition slightly smaller than the
other two. That way if you ever do need to do a reinstall you can either
store or copy your data/media files to a logical drive other then your
system drive to make reinstall easier. I keep a Ghost image of my system
drive on another logical drive and on a DVD for fast restore. I think
Maxblast will let you partition your hard drive and then copy the existing
drive to the first partition as long as the partition is big enough. --
