too much running in XP

Does anyone know how to disable all the programs that
automatically start when XP home starts. It's frustrating
being slowed down by all the programs that I'll never use!

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

But don't assume that every program that starts automatically
slows you down. Many do, but others are innocuous or nearly so.
You often see advice not to have too many program starting
automatically, but that's poor advice, as far as I'm concerned.
What's significant is not how *many* there are, but *which* they
are. You should autostart the ones that are useful to you, and
not any others.

This gets rid of *some* programs that start automatically, but
not all. Although some programs start from the Startup folder,
others start from registry entries.
 
Thanks for the msconfig info! That did the trick for me too. I was stuck in the "Startup" menu world and couldn't figure out the magic Roxie and the others were doing to come up at restart. Note that I couldn't find this info on microsoft.com proper. Thanks, again!
