My computer seems to be running much more slowly just
now. It has been suggested to me that I may have too
much running at start-up. How do I check on this? How
do I know what is necessary and how do I go about getting
rid of unnecessary stuff please? New to this so please
bear in mind! Any help much appreciated. Thamks.

Look in your notification area (or system tray). That's the right side of
your Taskbar. In this section, you'll see everything that runs at startup.
If there are a lot of things there, you will have a slow boot process.

To stop the unwanted items from starting when you boot, click Start>Run and
type msconfig.exe. Click Open.

Go to the Startup tab, and take a look at what's happening when you boot.
Uncheck the items you do not want to run anymore. Reboot, check Don't Show

Umm, I would suggest NOT checking the Don't Show... message. Only do that
if you know what causes it and know it's OK. Otherwise you might be missing
an alert that is meaningful.
Joli said that, I'm sure, because you are an admitted newbie and it's
easy to get paranoid - but I don't equate newbie with paranoia, so ...

Pop - just another newbie - but gaining experience daily.

When you have just unchecked something in MSCONFIG and restart the
prompt appears. You know why startup has changed (you just did it), so
it's safe to click the "don't show" box. It's not a permanent "don't
show." When/if something else is removed from startup, the prompt will
reappear.
