XP Home , SP 2
I just removed tons of files that were
deemed unnecessary as well as programs and the
associated software of programs I no longer use.

Did this via both add/ remove programs and eliminating files from program
directory.
I also used drive cleaning tool to empty recycle bin and temp files and all
that.

Eliminated tons of personal files too.

Yet, the defrag tool shows that I have now used even more space than before.
I am confused.

Are there ghosts left on my computer?

Ghosts? Maybe. Do you have Symantec's Protected Bin installed? If yes,
empty it too.

Also, you moved a lot of files of type and in locations that the system
will monitor. Assuming your XP setup is working well except for this space
reporting problem, create a new restore point. Then use disk cleanup to
remove all but the most recent restore point.

If still no luck, run chkdsk: Right click the drive icon and select
Properties> Tools. Choose to run chkdsk. Check both boxes in the prompt
that appears. Say yes to the prompt about running chkdsk on the next
restart. Close all open programs, restart to let chkdsk run.

Did you run the disk defragmenter in safe mode? Hope the defrag wa
completed efficiently, and that you had about 15% free space when u ra
the defragmenter. You cudin fact try using some third party tool and se
the results

Thanks to both comments.

Even ran Defrag in Safe Mode.

Installed several eraser type programs and am unsure
if the files compressed in my recycle bin have been removed.

Any further help will be appreciated.

Am simply attempting to clean up my system,
short of formatting HDD and reinstalling
XP Home and Sp2 and all my other operating programs, and their respective
updates.

System does seem to be a bit more efficient,

and fully erasing recycle bin may be the final step.

How can I assure myself the system is fairly clean?

Not just from virus's, which I have not any, but of unwanted files and
ghosts or compressed files in recycle bin and the like.

Please advise,
Robert
