too many wireless adapters?

Dell Inspiron 5150 xpsp2 / Linksys Wireless G broadband router WRT54G /
Trendnet TEW-424UB

When I boot up I have no connection. I can get connection by going through
many steps. Techs at Comcast, Linksys, and Trendnet say I should not have to
do this.

Linksys techs say I need to disable Dell xp wireless utility as it is
conflicting with my Trendnet wireless adapter.

If this sounds reasonable to you can you tell me how to do this as none of
them could. If you think there is someything else I chould do, please tell
me. If you would like I can tell you the steps I go through to get connection.

When you ping the router. (cmd prompt, "ping 192.168.0.1") do all 4 packets
reply, or do some 'timeout'?

How many wireless adapters do you have in this machine and why do you have
more than one?
 
I bought the external wireless card or adapter and plug it into a usb port in
the back of the laptop. I purchased the wireless router the same time. I am
not a tech so don't know if there are more adapters. The tech was suggesting
there is a conflict>please my first post and they are in conflict.

Okay - you have a wireless USB adapter (Trendnet TEW-424UB).
And a wireless router (WRT54G).
There is no conflict (I assure you) between the adapter and the router. In
fact - those are the things you need to work together.

However - I do wonder, given what you have - if your laptop came with a
built-in wireless network device and you did not need to buy the USB one to
use on the machine in question. In other words - you may have spent money
on a part you did not need as you already had spent the money and had it
integrated into the computer in question...

Unplug the TrendNet USB Wireless Adapter and uninstall its software.
Open up your network connections and tell us if you still have a Wireless
connection listed?

ping 192.168.0.1

Please get to the command line interpreter as follows:
Press Start
Press Run
Enter cmd in the box
XP will reply:

<folder path>cmd>

Enter ipconfig/all

Paste the results and post here.

I cannot copy and paste as I am talking on my desktop as my laptop is unable
to be online -furter I disconnected the adapter and uninstalled the software.
 
Now that I have removed the adapter's software and unplugged it, what should
I do based on the result of doing so.

Okay - this is good. You don't have built in wireless - so there should be
no Dell Wireless Utility to mess with the Trendnet TEW-424UB
software/controller.

Reboot once more for good measure and install the software/drivers per the
instructions that came with the device. Rebooting after you are done.
Connect it to your wireless network and come back here to let us know how it
went.

Someone else posted it - but it would be a good thing if you did the
following:

Start button --> RUN --> Type in:

cmd /k ipconfig /all

--> Click OK.

The command prompt will open and run IPCONFIG /all and report back to you.
If possible, copy/paste what you see into an email to yourself, get it on
the other computer you are using to post (or if you can get on the Internet
and have the laptop setup to do it - go to the newsgroups through there) and
post the results here.

It might've helped if you'd posted the model number of the laptop.

If the laptop is new, it probably has a slide switch on the front or
under the front of the case. You can turn it off or on there. Remove
the usb card and turn on the one that came with the laptop. If that
works, return the other.

This model definitely doesn't have the slide switch you're refering to.

@Grampy Pete-

It would appear from the connections you have listed your notebook doesn't
have a wireless adapter, which I find rather strange. You can double check
this in the device manager under "network adapters". If you don't see an
Intel, Broadcom or Dell wireless adapter in that list, I'd suggest
reinstalling that USB wireless adapter and trying again.

It doesn't make much sense that they'd have you try to uninstall the Dell
Wireless Utility if you don't even have a Dell Wireless adapter. Are you
seeing an icon for the Dell Wireless in your systray next to the clock?

I returned the adapter to the store where the tech said said he has seen some
returned. The usb was $19. and the new is $54. marked down to $39.
Got a Netgear card rather than a usb adapter. Could not remove the usb via
add/remove and problems began such as add/remove not populating.
I have formatted reinstalled the os and drivers and am set to go throught
the drill again.
Thank you for all your help. Btw, in connections I only have local area and
firewire; there is no other connective device.
