Too many recipients.

I have set up various distribution lists with over 100 email addresses in
each but when I use them my e-mails bounce back with the message "too many
recipients". I have spent another hour on the microsoft website today but
with the same results as always - going round in circles. I contacted my
server who say it's the way I have Outlook set up. Can anyone help me please?

This is not an Outlook issue. Your mail server is who is limiting your
number of recipients, not Outlook.
Distribution Lists are a very poor choice for grouping recipients for this
and other reasons.

Thank you, Russ Valentine

How would you group recipients, in that case? I need to mailshot a load of
people about three times a month.

Mailmerge.

It depends on how many recipients you need to send to. If you want to use
Outlook and if you need to send to more than 20 recipients, then a merge to
electronic mail would be your best option. It would circumvent any limit on
recipient number, allow you to personalize the messages, and allow you to
hide the other recipients without having to use the BCC field.

Thank you Gordon. My email addresses are only from another incoming email and
not in my Contacts and I've tried copying them over en masse but am unable to
do so as I then get a message saying that Outlook doesn't recognise the
format of the person's name (which precedes their email address as received
from my source). I can copy and paste only. I've contacted my server and in
the meantime will try to regain the will to live.
Many thanks for your help.

That was shorthand as the lists don't seem to be my main problem, which is
that the response is "too many recipients". I have several mailing lists, two
of which are succesfully created distribution lists and still I get them
bounce back. But today I'm using something sent to me with about 500 names on
it and I have to cut and paste 28 names at a time. You can imagine ....

I will try mailmerge and hope that Tiscali can explain why I can only mail
28 people at a time.
Thanks again

If your recipient list is not a consistent one that you need to maintain in
a reliable Contact database, you can always create an ad hoc data source
such as an Excel spreadsheet that you can use the data source for a mail
merge.

Mailmerge.

The earlier post is correct, it's not outlook it is the server. I have two email addresses, one that is @cox.net and the other which is @ my personal server. I had this frustrating problem of no group emails going out at all if it had over 28 recipients. When I changed my 'FROM' address in outlook to the @cox address, it worked fine.
