too many older hidden files

I put xp on an older computer and it installed it as a
new disc as opposed to an upgrade. Somehow it has saved
so many older files from windows ME that my 6 gig hard
drive says it is full. I want these coppies out so that
I have my memory free. How do I find the right coppies
to delete them. They should have been discarded at
instalation time according to the "new upload option
(overwrite)" instead of storing them in hidden files.
Please help me free up my hard drive. It's like they
have trippled all of my programs or something and hidden
the files so i can't figure out the ones I can get rid
of and the ones that I need for windows xp to work. Is
this a common problem.

NOTE: Removing files does not increase memory. It increases the amount of
free space on the hard drive.

If the upgrade succeeded, you should also see all of your old programs in
the startup menu. You may also see "Windows XP uninstall" in Add/Remove
Programs. Selecting it would allow you to choose "Remove backup files of
previous operating system."

If by "new disc" you mean "new folder" than you have a second not needed
Windows folder on the hard drive. You can check which one is the XP folder.
While in XP, click Start> Run and type %windir% then Click OK. Windows
Explorer should open displaying the current Windows folder that is in use.
The *other* Windows folder is the one you want to get rid of.

Also, if your old programs are not in the current startup menu, most will
have to be reinstalled before they will work in the new XP setup. You can
install them to the same folders. Apply any updates for the program, if
necessary, after reinstalling them.
