OK so my brothers machine has never been scanned and
after much success on my home and office computer I
figured this program would work great on his...so I ran
the scan and the numbers were going crazy 6000+ items on
his machine - once it got to that number the computer
freezes and an error appears that says virtual memory is
low. I thought it was jsut overload...so I thought ok
use the scan option where you choose the folder you want
it to scan but then once it scans that folder it looks
in "other known area" which defeats the purpose of the
specific folder scan...

So my question is anyone know what I can do on a very
overloaded machine to help get all the spyware off? I
know it will help once I can get the scan to complete and
clean I just need to be able to isolate a specific area
or maybe if someone knows about virtual memory and what I
can dooo???? Help.

Have you tried these operations running in safe mode?

1) Update both Microsoft Antispyware and your antivirus
application.

2B)Shut down the computer and turn off the power. Wait for
at least 30 seconds, and then restart the computer in Safe
mode or VGA mode.

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file
folders, eg: c:\temp, c:\windows\temp or C:\Documents and
Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the path to your temp
folder will change depending on your name) - sometimes
programmes can be hidden in there - watch out for
mysterious *.exe files or *.dll files in those folders.

3) Do full deep scans with Microsoft Antispyware. Repeat
scanning until a complete scan comes through clean. Ditto
with the antivirus.

This isn't guaranteed, but it works for a great many items
that at first appear not to be cleaned in normal mºde.

If your dealing with a badly infected machine like Engel
suggests safe mode would be advised, I also think you
should hit it with alot of scanners to get things clean
again, I suggest using Ewido, Spybot, Adaware & MS
Antispy.

As Engel suggests getting rid of the contents in temp
folders can also help when you know the system has
spyware problems to prevent things reloading and also
pulling the internet connection so they cannot contact
thier servers to download fresh files at least to you get
the junk off the system this isnt required if you do all
the clean up in safe mode as they will not be loaded in
safe mode so will not try to contact out.

Here's a few free removers that will help you

Deanna,
If the machine is giving you 6,000 hits, then it might be time to consider
rebuilding same.

Sounds like "get access denied error in the registry so
allocate 600MB of memory for no reason" bug that happens
in limited xp accounts (or any other situation where MS-
AS get an access denied in the registry)
