Too many files open...?

Howdy,

Running Win 2K pro...

For about two months, I have tried (with only very rare success) to
pipe a disk image from System "A" to a USB external drive that is on
System "D".

When the image creation fails, I get no Windows errors, but only
errors generated by the imaging software (happens to be Drive Image
7.)

Today, as I experimented with this, I learned something new:

I tried to save a file from System "A" to the external drive on System
"D" and got the Windows error "The save failed due to out of memory or
disk space."

It then asked if I wished to re-try. On choosing yes, I got:

"The disk is full, or too many files are open."

I know with certainty that the disk is about 90% empty. It is an 80
gig drive and the file I was trying to save was a tiny test MS Word
file. Also, no other files were open.

I feel that I may be nearing a solution here. It seems that Windows on
System "D" thinks that the drive is full, or that a ton of files are
open. It tells Drive Image, and Drive Image chokes.

What might be causing this, and might there be a solution?

Sincere thanks for any assistance,
