Too many Epson cleaning cycles

I've had a 1280 for a few years now. My personal computer was originally not
connected to the net. Now it is. Whereas before I would occasionally get an
automatic cleaning cycle, now I get them every time I use the printer. My
current ink consumption is outrageous. The curious thing is when I updated
the Epson software Zone Alarm reported that the computer was contacting
Epson. Does anyone know what that's about? Does anyone know how I can reset
this thing back to the way it was when I first got it?

Could it be, that you just used to print more, when the printer was new, and
now you're only printing occasionally ? That would explain the need to do a
cleaning cycle more frequently.

As far as Zonealarm is concerned, bring up its control centre, click on
"programs" and check, if any of the listed entries looks like an "Epson call
home utility". If so, you can easily and permanently disable it right there.
I have 2 Epsons connected (not a 1280), and none of them ever tried to call
home.

Good luck

No. If anything the opposite would be true. It used to just turn on. It
would occasionally clean the heads. I was impressed because I had a 777
which went through a lot of carts because it cleaned the heads all the time.

Would that be closing the barn door after the horse got out? I disallowed
the Epson Printer Status Agent in ZA (printer is not shared) when I realized
the printer's operation had changed. No difference. It's possible that's
what was accessing the internet during installation, I didn't pay that close
attention since I wasn't expecting problems. I also uninstalled the
drivers, even went through the registry and wiped out all reference to
Epson, reloaded the original drivers and still no difference. Is there such
a thing as a hardware reset?

If you want to cut down on cleaning cycles leave the printer off until you
need to print. Also turn it off using the power button on the printer. The
longer you leave the printer on without printing the longer the cleaning
cycle will be before it goes to print. If you leave it off and then turn it
on it will run a short one compared to leaving the printer on all the time.

If you reinstalled the driver, did you register the printer? That may be
what Zone Alarm is finding is the registration program. That came up once
for me but once I deleted the cookie for registration I never had the
problem again.

.......and in reply I say!:

Sorry. It really seems to me that all of this is edge trimming. These
printers chew ink at $$ per minute. Running around "behaving
correctly" is going to allow us to tolerate a bloody awful situation.

I realise that having bought a printer, any help t0o make the bste of
it is good. But it seems that whatever you do, the price of the
printer is lost in the price of the wasted ink.

That certainly is not true! If the printer is switched off then it will
certainly do a short cleaning cycle when it is next switched on
PROVIDED:
a) it is switched on within 48hrs of being switched off
b) the mains power has stayed up during that time.

In either of these conditions the printer will go through a long
cleaning cycle when it is switched on.

Leaving the printer on produces no more cleaning cycles than switching
it off between uses - quite the opposite if periods between prints is
less than an hour or so. The printer goes into a standby mode with the
heads fully parked and sealed after a few minutes of non-use - exactly
the same procedure it goes through when switching off at the power
button.

I appreciate the apparently knowledgable news....but this means it
does not get any better than now.... WITS it still sucks!

Until I do the other one, this one means nothing

Well I was specifically responding to the erroneous advice you were
being given! In response to your original query, however, there are a
couple of questions that need answered first.

1. Was there any particular reason why you upgraded the Epson software?
If it was just to get the latest version then it might be possible to
get back to the original without any lost functionality.

2. When you deleted all reference to Epson in your registry, did that
include EPUS*? Some of the Epson keys in the registry don't contain the
word Epson at all, only EPUS###, such as some entries under
HK_LM\ENUM\USB and other areas. If these references remain in your
registry then you have not properly cleaned it and a subsequent
re-installation of the original will not necessarily go through
correctly.

If the answer to both of these is negative then I recommend removing the
printer from your system using the add/remove software applet under
control panel, followed by a proper clean of all Epson related
references from the registry, including anything that looks like it
could be an Epson USB driver and the installation of the ORIGINAL
software. It may not resolve the problem, but it will determine if it
is related to the newer drivers you have installed.

The system was originally set up at the studio, no internet. All the drivers
and such were a few years old. When I brought it home I upgraded/updated
everything as a matter of course.

No, I didn't but I just checked and a search for epus doesn't turn up
anything.
HK_LM\SYSTEM\ENUM\USB? Just ROOT_HUB and Vid_04a9&Pid_3084

Your time/effort is definetely appreciated. I think I'm going to remove
everything again, just reinstall the original driver WITHOUT the Epson
Status Agent and use a third party product I found on the web at
http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
Wish me luck.
Does the printer itself have something like an eeprom that might be reset?

If it ain't broke... you've learned the lesson the hard way. ;-)

There should be a Vid... key in there which contains EPUSB file
references if the driver is installed correctly. You might have already
removed it with your other edits though.

I don't think that applet will help in this situation as it is mainly
for resetting cartridge chips and waste ink counters. I would be
interested to know if you do have success with it and what changes made
the difference.
Wish me luck.

You've got it!

Several.
