I have a USB device that I want to install. When I go through XP's hardward
installation it says there are 4 different files/drivers that I can choose
from. Is there any way that I can delete these files and start fresh? Will
it hurt anything?

Choose the one that is correct for your device.

The problem is that none of them work. They all install fine but my device
does not work even though device manager says it is fine. That's why I want
to remove them all and start over.

Do you have a device driver CD that came with the USB device
or is there a XP driver for the device on the mfg'r website?
Download and install the correct driver to your computer.
Use the device manager to remove the USB device. Then
install the device again and the correct driver should be
available.

I've done that as well. If I uninstall the device, autodetect starts up and
the same 4 drivers are still there for me to select from. I've downloaded
the mfg drivers and set them up but when I ask for the install to look where
they are, it doesn't choose them.

Remove the plug.
Use device manager to remove the device.
Download the drivers, right click on the driver file and see
if there is an "install" feature, if so, install it.
Then plug the device in again and you should have the 5th
driver available.
