Too many changes after updates

Yesterday morning started off well, and a bonus, I thought, was
availability of an update. After it was installed and re-booted, I
found it had completely ignored my "personalisations" and threw my
carefully plotted Desktop arrangement into chaos.
Even when I used what I had written down about font size and all that,
it still looked different, and I think I spent an hour putting the
Desktop the way I like it to be.
I can't quite believe it myself, but after I left the computer to have
my lunch (this is home computer, not business,) I came back, sat down,
and saw the desktop had been completely dis-arranged all over again.
(There had not been a re-boot.)
(Assume two paragraphs here of venting and cursing.)
You know my questions, but I'll ask anyway: is there any way to freeze
settings that will survive the friendly fire of an update?

CXT - Network - PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP

But after I sent that note, and re-did about half of my desktop
arrangement, MS sent a note in the update window that it wanted to
download and install SP1.
I clicked yes and now it is installed, and as to the subject of this
thread, it is back to square 1 for me.

I also had the download the other day. Nothing changed on my desktop,
however it did download 3 parts I was told in the dialogue box.
What I immediately noticed was the CXT - Network - PCI Soft Data Fax Modem
with SmartCP being downloaded and I could swear it had been an option for the
longest time that I did not want nor do I need. It downloaded and I removed
it. Immediately on removing it, drivers for the darn thing were also
downloaded. I have gone through this process twice so far and each time a
driver is loaded immediately following almost right on top of the removal. I
don't want any Soft Data Fax Modem, we have enough problems being scared
about the highspeed connection and anti virus software and router etc already
hoping it is enough to stop bad things from happening. A piece of software I
know nothing about and don't need nor want in the first place just scares the
pants off me.

If you are asking how to stop an update from being offered by Windows
Update, when it appears in WU right click on its line and you will see
information about the update and an option to hide the update. That will
stop it. You can re-instate a hidden update by using the link in the left
panel on the WU home page (the page that opens when you run WU).

It sounds like your computer has a modem installed, even if you don't use
it.
If it is on the mainboard, you can disable it in BIOS.
If it is an addin, you can physically remove it...viola, no more driver
updates.
