Hi Jo,
The i386 folder in the hard disk contains the Operating System source files.
(OEMs dont provide the XP CDs.)
You need to edit the registry and change the sourcepath value to the actual
target (instead of CD)
- Open Registry Editor: Click | Start | Run | type "Regedit"
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
In the right pane, double-click the key "SourcePath" and type the folder
name where Windows installation files are stored in the hard drive.
Generally, "C:\Windows"
IMPORTANT: If the source files exist in the folder "C:\Windows\i386", you
will need to set the value of the key as "C:\Windows" instead of
"C:\Windows\i386".
..
* You need to know the exact location of i386 folder. Most cases, it will be
in C:\Windows\i386 or C:\i386 *
If the i386 dump is not there in hard disk, the above procedure is useless.
Obtain a CD from HP.
After changing the above keys, restart the system and try this:
Click Start | Run | type "SFC /SCANNOW"

I keep getting a dialogue box that says files required for
Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized
versions. The error message tells me to insert my Windows
XP Home Edition CD-ROM, but HP did not supply one with my
Pavilion 7955. Now the very same machine tells me I must
have it. The computer is slow and performing badly. What
should I do?
