I have to follow a report format that requires the main
body of text to be arranged in the following
order "INTRODUCTION 1.0" but for the TOC to be
transposed to the more standard order "1.0
INTRODUCTION". The body of the text is currently arranged
in a table with the "INTRODUCTION" and "1.0" text in
individual cells and referenced as FIRST COLUMN and SECOND
COLUMN respectively.

Is there any way that I can use the automatic TOC to show
these 2 different fields on the same line ot the TOC, but
in reverse order?

Hi Chris,

You can use TC fields to set TOC entries instead of (or in
addition to) building the TOC with styles.

In Word's help, search: TC field
Read what that does.

Then read up on the TOC field.

You can probably build the TOC field using the dialog box,
but you'll have to enter the information for the TC fields
either directly in the document or using the Insert/Fields
functionality. Personally, I prefer the direct method:
- Ctrl+F9 to insert the field brackets { }
- Alt+F9 to toggle field codes on/off (or Shift+F9 to toggle
just the selected field)

Hi Chris

The workaround I would use for this is to use two different styles for the
title and number of the section in the main body (sounds like this may be
what you do anyway). Then in the TOC, include only the title style (FIRST
COLUMN ?), and number the corresponding TOC style for that level to
reproduce the '1.0' etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I did receive an original TOC format for this report,
although it appears to be corrupted as all formatting and
text positioning is lost when I update. The code for this
inherited TOC is as follows:
{TOC \n \p " " \h \z \t "Second Column,2,First
Column,2,Section Title,1"}
Does this already consider your proposed approach?

Chris

Hi Chris

Yes, you can make minor amendments to this and achieve what I'm suggesting.
You could edit the field code directly to remove the "Second column, 2"
entry - this should take out the "1.0" etc. entries.

Formatting and text positioning, and the pseudo numbering, come from the TOC
styles. TOC 1 will be the style for your Section Title, and TOC 2 for the
title in 'First column' style. So you need to modify these styles to the
formatting you want, including the addition of numbering to TOC 2.
