TOC no longer links

I created a several page document with a TOC that had
links. I updated the table and now the links are gone. I
have Word 97 and I created the original document using
word 2000. Can I get the links back?
 
Word 97 doesn't format the entire TOC entry as a hyperlink, but the page
number still links to the page.
