ToC makes page numbers disappear

Bill

I've been setting up a report with a few separate sections. The first
section is the title page, no page numbering. The second section is for the
executive summary and the table of contents, with page numbers in the footer
in italics. Seems to work fine -- the first page of this section has a page
number and the numbering starts at 1. The next section is the body of the
report, with page numbers in the header but not on the first page of this
section. Page numbering in this section starts at 1 (i.e., working fine).

The problem is that when I replace the table of contents in section 2 the
page numbers in the footer of section 2 disappear! What's going on? I
wouldn't have thought there would be any connection.

TIA for any suggestions.

I have some new info: When I update the table of contents (replace it), it
seems to be deleting the section break that follows the table of contents.
Clicking on the table of contents selects the whole table of contents (as
expected) but not the section break (as expected). Why would replacing the
table of contents replace the section break even though the section break is
not selected? I tried putting a couple of blank paragraphs after the table
of contents and before the section break and it still deletes the section
break.

BTW, it's Word 2002 SP-2.

Possibly you managed to get the section break inside the table field. It's
sometimes very hard to tell that you've done this.

Well, sonofagun, that seems to be it. I have no idea how that happened. The
section break is "inside" the table field but it's not visibly within the
table and it doesn't get highlighted with the rest of the table when I click
to the left of the table. I tried to fix it by putting in a bunch more
paragraphs after the table but they were "inside" the table too. I turned on
show field codes (Tools Options View) and that let me see what was going on.
I've now got it fixed (I think) by doing the section breaks all over again
(they contain headers and page number styles etc), deleting the table of
contents entirely, putting a bunch of dummy paragraphs before and after
where I want the table of contents to go, insert the table of contents, and
remove the dummy paragraphs.

Hmmm....

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.
