ToC Fields show

It's been a while since I've had the need to create a Table of Contents,
but I recently did using the "mark your own fields" (ALT-SHFT-O) method
rather than using outline levels or styles. I'm using Word 2003 sp3.

The ToC was created properly, but each ToC field in the body of the
document shows in Print Layout view whether or not the Show/Hide ¶
button is pressed. The pages _print_ as expected (without showing the
fields).

I thought that ToC fields shouldn't show in Print Layout. Am I just
misremembering or is there some setting I'm missing?
 
TC fields are formatted as Hidden. You have to hide Hidden text to hide
them.

Hiding Hidden text isn't as straight-forward as I thought.

If you look up Hide Text in Word Help, after telling you how to use
Format>Font to hide text, it says

Note To view hidden text on the screen, click Show/Hide ¶ on the
Standard toolbar.

What it DOESN'T tell you is that Hidden text NEVER hides (regardless of
the Show/Hide ¶ button) if there is a check in the box for Hidden Text
in Tools > Options > View.
