that wasn't really what i wanted; the option it gave me
was "On resume, display Welcome screen"...

correct, i don't want that. but i still want it to prompt
me for a password, but not to go to the welcome screen; a
password prompt dialog box came up befpre; i had it setup
that way before, before i hit some button to change it....

The wording here varies. On my machine it says "on resume, require
password." However, the results are the same - a welcome screen appears
after ending the screensaver.

Try pressing Windows key + L. This will lock the workstation. Perhaps this
is what you're after?
