Both Word and Excel have a setting for this. Try asking
the question in a Word/Excel newsgroup - that's where
you will find the experts on these topics.

Word: Tools > Options > File Locations > Documents > Modify...

Excel: Tools > Options > General > Default File Location > [fill in the
blank]

Above are for Office XP.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

THANK U MR. WLATERIUS AND PEGASUS.
I MENTIONED IT AS EXCEL OR WORD FOR EXAMPLE. BUT THE QUESTION IS
PERTAINING TO WINDOWS 2K ONLY. LIKE ANY APPLICATION FOR EXAMPLE
OUTLOOK EXPRESS, I JUST WANT TO OPEN IN THE FOLDER I WANT TO. I CAN
BE GIVEN FISH OR TEACH ME FISHING--THAT WAS A GOOD ONE.

The answer is still the same: It depends on the application.
OE in fact is quite specific about the location of its mail
files, and the boys in the OE newsgroup would be glad
to help you.
By the way, please do not post all in upper case. It's hard
to read and it's called "shouting" in newsgroups. People
do not like being shouted at.
