To Hibernate or not

I am running XP SP3 on a Dell 3000 system. I understand that hibernation
mode will essentially shut down my system, to conserve electricity, while
saving memory, so that it can return to its previous state without rebooting.
My question is: Are there any downsides to hibernation that I should be
considering?

Power saving options like Standby and Hibernation were designed for
laptops, to conserve battery power. They don't always work well, or at
all, on desktop hardware.

Hibernate works for me on a Dell 9100.

The only one I've encountered is occasional corruption in the file that
hibernation creates (hiberfil.sys), resulting in problems starting up. When
it does come up, the previous "state" is lost - so any unsaved changes to
data documents would more than likely be lost, too. But then, I would never
trust an unsaved document to survive hibernation anyway, but just use it as
a tool to save starting-up time and electricity.
