Two computers ago somebody gave me a way to disable the Messenger service of
Windows 2000, as this program could cause breaches of security and spammers
and others could use to damage your files. It was a simple procedure using
the Register and changing a value of 1 to zero, but I have no reference or
way of remembering this procedure. I am fed up with a messenger that pops-up
all the time stating that my files are in danger, etc. and which I find is a
scam, for which they want to charge $19 and for which you get free downloads
from Microsoft and other programs. The message scares you with a description
of files or platforms being attacked, amongst them, of course, WSindows
2000. They do not send a link but just state that you contact them at the
following address: www.updatenow.org
I have used a program I have for protecting from spam etc. but nothing
happens, it keeps popping ad infinitum. PLS HELP.

Switch it off in Services!

Services, Messenger, Properties, STOP

/Anders

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Services &
disable the unrequired Services...

Review your firewall rules. Block incoming ports 135, 137-139, 445. In
fact, block all unsolicited incoming traffic.
