To field error message

When I click the To button beside the To field, I get an error "The address
list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address
list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not
have permissions. For information on ..." When I click OK, I get the Select
Names dialog, which is empty. I click Show Names from the dropdown and see
two items named Contacts. If I select the first one, I get my contacts and
can proceed.

I have three machines on a home net, with my .pst file on a net share
accessible to all three. I was getting this behavior on another machine, now
it's on another.

My folder list shows only one Contacts item (I do have a number of subitems
under it). It shows no Personal Folders section.

It looks like I have one full contacts folder and one empty one, with the
empty one selected as default. But I don't see evidence of two folders
anywhere except in that dialog.

What's wrong, and what can I do about it?

thanks,
Chuck

Go to the Tools menu > Email accounts > View/Change existing address
books/directories > Click Next > Highlight Outlook Address Book > Click
Change. Remove the 'bad' folder if you can tell else remove all of the them
and reset your current Contacts folder as an address book. You can do that
by right clicking on the Contacts folder, choosing "Properties" then going
to the Outlook Address Book tab. Check the "Show this folder as an email
address book" box

Hmm. I deleted both items, then went to designate my Contacts folder as an
address book, as you suggested, Vince, but "Show this folder as an email
address book" was already checked, and when I clicked the To button in a new
message I got the same error. The Select names dialog still showed both items
and I had to click the second one listed to get my contacts.

Any other thoughts?

thanks,
Chuck

Did you follow directions and close and restart Outlook?

Hi Milly, not sure if I closed and restarted Outlook at that particular point
(possibly not), but I did later and now both items are gone in View/Change
address book and I see no Contacts folder in the Nav pane. However, clicking
the Contacts button at the bottom of the Nav pane opens my Contacts folder
just fine. And when I click To in a new message I get the Select Names dialog
showing Outlook Address Book in the "Show Names from the' box but no choices
under it -- and 'No entries in this address book' below.

Ideas?

thanks,
Chuck

Right-click your Contacts folder, choose Properties, select the Outlook
Address Book tab and check the box labeled "Show this folder as an e-mail
Address Book".

Thanks, Brian, but we've been there, back earlier in the thread. Currently I
can't even see a Contacts folder in the Nav view.

Sorry. I didn't go back and review the whole thread. I have now. I don't
see where anyone suggested removing the entire Outlook Address Book service
and re-adding it. Try that. Remove the service completely, stop and
restart Outlook, then add the service back in. Then make sure the "Show
this folder..." option is checked.

Um, how do I get rid of the Address Book service?

Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories or address
books>Next. Select Outlook Address Book and click Remove.

Thanks, Brian, Milly, Vince. You got me there. I'm now getting the correct
address book info when I click To:.
