to create a new partition

My C drive presently has 1 partition, which takes up the whole drive
and contains Windows xp pro. I want to create a new partition on that
drive for linux. Is there any way to do this without reinstalling
windows xp pro ?

Assuming I have to reinstall xp pro, if I do install, I will lose any of
the functionality of my computer that is not included in xp pro.
Therefore, I would like to know which directories and files are native
to xp pro so I can figure out what I will have to add after I reinstall.
Is there a web site that lists the contents of a fresh install before
anything else is added ?

Alternatively, I have a cd with the set up that came with my computer.
All it need is an emty partiion. If I can somehow create two partitions
before I install anything I can use this cd to install win xp pro.
However, I don't know how to format the disc and create two partions.

Here is the contents of my program files directory. Can you tell me
which directories are not included with xp pro ? Thanks.

Hi

Either of the following programs will create new partitions for you:

Acronis Partition - http://www.acronis.com/products/partitionexpert/
Partition Magic - http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/index.html

Hi rodeored,

Purchase Partition Magic and use it to decrease the size of your
partition (let's say by 6 GB). Then use Partition Magic to create two
partitions (one swap = your amount of RAM), the rest an ext2
partition.

Install linux in the created partition.
You must back up all your data, as a power outage during these
operations could prove awful.

You will also want to create an XP boot disc, containing boot.ini,
ntldr and ntdetect.com
You can use this to boot if you have any problems during the linux
install.

Also get acquainted with the Recovery console and the fixmbr command,
in case someday you want to remove linux.

Thanks for all that advice, I know I can use a third party program but I
would like to do it with out any. I don't mind reinstalling xp,

You can create partitions with the XP CD, when you install XP you can
remove old partitions and create new ones as you see fit. When you're
doing this just leave a sufficient amount unallocated for the linux
partition. After you are done installing XP and you install linux, you
can tell it to install in the unallocated space.

See if this helps:

Remember to turn on XP's firewall before connecting to the internet.
