Hi-you gave someone (teri) advice on this newsgroup a few
lines before about how to copy her account info to
another new user account cause her name was mispelled- I
right clicked on comp>prop>advance tab>then settings on
the user profile ( as you told her to do)
My question is: I noticed that the first name listed on
the list said, 'Account Unknown' then it listed the MB
size. SHOULD that be there and what does it mean and why
soes it NOT say a name like the rest of the user accounts
on our home pc.
I read these NG's alot to learn my pc and I'd appreciate
any input.thanks to whomever answers

Hi,
Is your machine on a domain ? If so and the account is defined to the domain
and your machine is not connected to it, then this kind of a thing can
happen. Else if you installed XP on a current installation, then this entry
is present due to the older account which was not wiped off. Basically,
windows can find the account but not the account info.

Anando, I dont know what you mean about my machine being
on a domain. I'll tell you what I do know. My pc was
bought brand-new 1 year ago and everything was installed
already, from programs to xp to EVERYTHING.It is a
pentium 2300 Dell-And actually, 1 year ago is when I
started learning how to use the pc with no previous
experience-So my knowledge on terminology is pretty
novice. Sorry. But, I hope the information I gave you
helps- And thanks for helping on this.

Usually that's an account that has been removed using the user accounts applet
from control panel, but the files remain even thought the user was removed. If
these files aren't important or needed, just right click my
computer>advanced>user profiles settings>highlight the unknown (removed)account
and click delete. Ok your way out.

| Hi,
| Ok probably then there was some account setup by the OEM (DELL in this case)
| and the account info probably does not exist properly in the registry and
| hence Windows cannot retrieve it.

Usually that's an account that has been removed using the user accounts applet
from control panel, but the files remain even thought the user was removed. If
these files aren't important or needed, just right click my
computer>advanced>user profiles settings>highlight the unknown (removed)account
and click delete. Ok your way out.

Check folders in Documents and Settings for any leftover folders for this
unknown user first. May find things that you want to keep (documents, for
example) and these can be copied to another location before deleting
the Account Unknown.

Also, Anando is correct that it could be a leftover from an OEM install as
explained in this article:

The Owner Account Is Displayed As "Account Unknown" in Profiles on Windows
XP Home Edition-Based Computers
