Thank you all for responding to my original post. Here's what I did:

1. I installed and ran Ad-aware and Spybot.
2. I installed AVG Anti-virus.
3. I installed the ZoneAlarm firewall.
4. I installed pop-up stoppers for Internet Explorer.

I think my system is pretty clean now, but I am still experiencing a
problem -- and this problem is one of the main reasons why I decided
to look into the installation of all these security measures in the
first place.

In Windows XP, I cannot run MSCONFIG, and the Task Manager does not
work either. When I try to run either of these things, it shuts down
after about one second. Somebody once told me that this is due to a
virus. Do you guys think this is true? I mean, I feel like I've done
all I can do, and I still have this issue.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Why not use a better, more secure, browser that already has popup
blocking built in? As long as you continue to use IE, you're asking
for trouble. <g>

I've heard that Mozilla is becoming more popular. One of my
supervisors at work uses it. Built-in pop-up blocking is a nice
feature, but in what other ways is it superior to IE?

Better compliance. More secure.

As Conor said, the security alone will make Mozilla worthwhile. It is
not an 'operating system component' and won't interfere with your OS.

Tabbed browsing. Open multiple pages in tabs rather than whole new
windows (which all end up as buttons on your task bar). I usually have
five or six tabs open.

Extensible. For example, this add-on gives you the capability to add
checkboxes for disabling JavaScript, Flash, images, author fonts and
so forth right under the menu.

You install it without regard to IE being present. I currently have
about eight browsers installed, including Moz, Firefox, Opera,
K-Meleon, Lynx, WebTV <g>...
