Ace, thanks for the reply on browsing. The resources that
I'm making reference to are the resources that to can view
from the browsing option when you are mapping a network
drive. Would the NetBIOS apply to this also?

With Windows 2000 and the Active Directory this isn't exactly true. Only if you want "Browsing" to work do you need netbios. Network Neighborhood also
allows you to browse via the Active Directory. This would allow clients to find published resources without the need for Netbios. Also, without netbios enabled,
it is possible to access shares via \\servername\sharename. Windows 2000 now uses direct host SMB connections which is essentially a netbiosless
connection for SMB.

Thank you,
Mike Johnston

Thanks for the update Michael. One question, does Direct Host SMB work
across routers (as such NetBIOS does not) or do we still need WINS for this
functionality, as usual?

If so, then if using WINS, in your opinion, do we then need NetBIOS anyway
for WINS functionality or will that work with Direct Host SMB also?
