By mistake I checked "always open this file type with this
application" option when opening a .tmp file with
Powerpoint. Now I can't get the file type .tmp back to
where an "open with" dialogue box always appears when I
click on the .tmp file.
How can I reset this file type to always trigger the
dialogue box when I click on a .tmp file?

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types.
Run down the list to your file extension of .tmp, highlight it, delete it.
