Good point. XPSP2 could be the cure.
What I need to do is duplicate the problem, and then prove that XPSP2 really
is the solution. And right now, I'm hamstrung by not knowing what the
average user is doing to get into this situation. The adware/spyware lead is
tasty -- we've seen issues before where the user went to a website,
installed some software to play an online game, and incidentally installed a
DShow filter with merit value so high that it got added it to just about
every graph created, causing problems in MM.
Here's what I'll do moving forward:
1. I'll add "Try Installing XPSP2" up to the top of my suggesstion list, and
see how often that alone solves the problem.
2. I'll ensure that the machine I'm using to try to repro the problem is
running XPSP1 or earlier.
If anyone has any ideas on how I can get a repro of the problem, please
post!
Thanks!

I think you jumped to the conclusion too quickly. If we observe closely the
OP has performed two corrective actions:
1. Used Adaware
2. Applied SP2.
Now I am pretty sure that in this case it is the second action that fixed it
not the first. Although I have also seen reports of Adaware fixing the
missing effects syndrome but one sure shot way to fix it is to apply the
SP2. I would therefore conclude that this particular report does not
identify Adaware as the potential fixer so looking into the log file may be
fruitless.

Hi Marg --
That's terrific! Can you by any chance help us determine culprit? We seen
several people report back that installing adware/spyware removers have
solved their titles, transitions and effects problems. I've been trying to
reproduce the issue, but it's a bit like searching for a needle in a
haystack ...
Any pointers would help -- Maybe there's something in the log file
generated
by AdAware that would indicate the problem? I'd love to take a look at the
log file if you're willing to send it to me ...

Hey Everyone, I figured it out! The titles I created never appeared in on
my
projects with Windows movie maker, just gray screens. Here's what I did
to
make them appear:
If you use AdAware or a similar program, upgrade to the latest version.
Download the update for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. This takes a
lot of time. Be sure to disable your virus scanner for the duration.
I think it was the Service Pack 2 upgrades that made all the difference.
My
titles appear now and I am so relieved I had to share this!
