Are the DuraBrite inks more prone to clogging?

I'd like to add a really good printer for photo printing primarily. what
part should the ink chemistry play in the choice?

When you see a photograph, aren't you really looking at the ink? I would
say that ink chemistry is an essential part of making good photo images. As
for clogging, I can't say.

It might be instead that the smaller droplet size of the latest Epson
printers makes them more prone to clogging.

The C80 (an old model now) uses essentially pigment based inks: you wouldn't
therefore normally use one for Photo work as the pigment tends to blank
darker colours whereas white shines through.
The next C80 replacement now is the C64 and C84 the later having a larger
black ink capacity cartridge of 30ml. Again they are both pigment
cartridges. Maybe the R300 or R500 which are aimed at the Photo market is
where you should be looking. The Canon's such as the i865 or i900/9000 are
also pretty good with no chips on the cartridge. The other part of the
puzzle is using the correct paper.

The C80 may be an old model but it is certainly suitable for photo
printing. If you want a second opinion on that, see the highly regarded
Luminous Landscape site:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/epson_c80.shtml

where Alain Briot states: "I've received countless emails asking me if the
C80 is a photo-quality printer. The answer is a resounding Yes! I did not
mention it in my review since it seemed obvious to me (I would not review
a non photo-quality printer)".

The main difference between using dye-based and pigment-based inks is that
the pigment-based inks will be more fade resistant. Both can produce
excellent results when used for photo work (though dye-based inks tend to
result in better saturated blacks). That you don't seem to be aware of
that makes me doubt your ability to offer sound advice in your chosen
business arena.

I use my C80 about once a week. I turn it off after using it, which
parks the heads. It doesn't clog.

And the prints don't fade.

Many a false word spoken in haste Jon :-) Like whenever and wherever I've
mentioned the ability of the C80 to produce excellent Photo work everyone
claiming expertise in that area has loudly claimed it isn't so.
Many of them in this newsgroup some time ago. So I hesitate to mention it
anymore.
I mentioned it as an old model because you can't buy it anymore.
My own tests were great with the C80 which I'm still using to print invoices
and Waterproof despatch notes and labels. The original Photo work is still
Lightfast after some 9 months of exposure in a front South facing office.
So I agree with you ! But the experts (self elected or not) claim the C80
and all pigmented printers are bad news for professional work ??
Over to you.

So, despite your own opinion to the contrary, you go along with that and
pass that opinion on?

I get excellent photo results from a pigment ink printer, as do
photographers I know and know of. Many of them, including myself, sell
these prints. I haven't heard of anyone getting complaints about the
print quality and have not had any complaints myself.
