I've always disliked TinyURL and similar URL substitutions in ng posts
because I have even less idea where I'm really going than usual. At least
when posters include both the long and short versions I have a choice. When
someone does us a "favor" but only posts the shortened form, you can now see
the real URL. The developer also provides character counts for comparison.

Try these from "alt.comp.freeware links at Sun Aug 29 00:02:06 2004"
(optionally, just enter the last five characters):

Thanks for that, Bill. Like you, I've often been nervous about clicking
on certain TinyURL links in newsgroups. This site at least gives some
hint as to where the link might take you.

Ian.

You are welcome but credit should go to Dave as I am merely the messenger.
I suspect I will be thanking you shortly.

Seems a lot of work when one can simply switch to a decent newsreader
that doesn't wrap URL's...

Done ;o)

http://surl.co.uk/lookup.asp

or

http://surl.co.uk/lookup.asp?slu=1&s=105

Where 105 is the sURL you are looking up.......

If looking up long URL's, I'd suggest using the following URL instead as
there are known problems with browsers and the extremely long URL's (if your
browser doesn't handle them too well, you will see an "Invalid sURL ID"
error).......
