I have recently installed FrontPage 98 on a new machine, and need to import
a large existing website. (Before I continue, please don't answer that I
ought to upgrade to the latest version of FrontPage - at the moment I can't
justify the expense, much as I'd like to!) I thought I could just do the
following:
1. Network the machines together
2. Start FrontPage 98
3. Choose 'Create a New FrontPage Web'
4. Choose 'Import an Existing Web'
5. Enter the location of the files on the old computer (beneath the
\Inetpub\wwwroot directory)
6. Perform the import
However, when I try this the import fails after around 10 seconds with the
message 'The server connection has timed out'. (I've tried this a number of
times.)
I tried copying the files to a temporary directory on the target computer
before performing the import, but the same problem occurred.
If I try to import from the website itself (i.e. across the Internet) rather
than from files on my local machine, then the import proceeds without
problems - except that when it completes, some files are missing (those not
explicitly linked from other pages in the site). (I know that I could import
these missing files one-by-one, but I'd rather not if I don't have to - it
would be all to easy to miss some important files).
I've tried searching for a solution to this problem, but all I've found are
references to timeout problems when publishing a site, not when importing it
from files. Can anyone help? Many thanks.
