Timout when Importing Existing Web

I have recently installed FrontPage 98 on a new machine, and need to import
a large existing website. (Before I continue, please don't answer that I
ought to upgrade to the latest version of FrontPage - at the moment I can't
justify the expense, much as I'd like to!) I thought I could just do the
following:

1. Network the machines together
2. Start FrontPage 98
3. Choose 'Create a New FrontPage Web'
4. Choose 'Import an Existing Web'
5. Enter the location of the files on the old computer (beneath the
\Inetpub\wwwroot directory)
6. Perform the import

However, when I try this the import fails after around 10 seconds with the
message 'The server connection has timed out'. (I've tried this a number of
times.)

I tried copying the files to a temporary directory on the target computer
before performing the import, but the same problem occurred.

If I try to import from the website itself (i.e. across the Internet) rather
than from files on my local machine, then the import proceeds without
problems - except that when it completes, some files are missing (those not
explicitly linked from other pages in the site). (I know that I could import
these missing files one-by-one, but I'd rather not if I don't have to - it
would be all to easy to miss some important files).

I've tried searching for a solution to this problem, but all I've found are
references to timeout problems when publishing a site, not when importing it
from files. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Best Regards, Phil Steer

From FP98 on the old machine, publish to the http:/machinename or
http://ipaddress of the new machine, which you should have installed IIS.

1) Uninstall FP98, then reinstall it on Win XP Pro in Custom mode and Do not Install PWS or Web Publishing
2) In Add / Remove Programs - Windows make sure you have IIS installed
3) Download and install the FP SE - see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02win.asp
and
http://microsoft.com/technet/treevi...technol/sharepnt/proddocs/admindoc/owsd02.asp

The publish from one networked machine to the other
- publish to your FP SE Server based web - to say http://localhost/subwebname/
- not a disc based location as in \Inetpub\wwwroot directory

Instead of importing files, try "publishing". Just like
you would publish up from your local machine to a server,
publish "down", from the server to your local machine.

Beware, when FP is in charge of file transfers, it is
inherent that 1) if your web is > 1MB, and 2) you've got a
SLOW internet connection, you will be bound to have
timeouts. No matter the version of FP.

If all else fails and you really need it, contact yout
host and give 'em 10 bucks to burn a CD and send it to you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already done nos. 1 and 2 (without
success), but publishing from one machine to the other (as suggested by
someone else) worked without problems.
