Running Winxp pro SP2
When booting one or two programmes do not start. They seem not to have
time to do so during the boot process. I have to start them
individually after boot.
Sometimes it is T clock sometimes Zone Alarm and sometimes it is MSGTAG.
Is there a way to slow down the boot and extend the time allowed to
start these programmes.
Thanks to anyone with some ideas.

If Zone Alarm is not loading you likely have a problem with your sys.
Try starting a boot logging boot, from the Safe Mode startup menu
I should have explained that the problem is completely random and
sometimes all programmes load and run normally.

"Completely random" errors are usually caused by failing hardware. We
don't really have enough information about your system to give you
focused help, but here are general hardware troubleshooting steps:

I would start with checking the RAM and then the hard drive.

From the software side, do clean-boot troubleshooting:

Please post a copy of any Warning / Error Report from Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Quite a bit actually but not regarding your time out.

Explanation
The user restarted or shut down the computer by clicking Start or
pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then clicking Shut Down. The
message displays the Windows product information for the
computer logging the message, including the product name,
version, build number, service pack number, and operating
system type.

Your report came from the System log. Did you check the
Application log. There may be nothing there even so.

The problem with Zone Alarm starting up is common for XP versions of that
application. They struggle to keep it "fixed" but it continues to trouble
users now and then.

When one startup program struggles to start, there may be other programs in
queue waiting to start. They may or may not get the chance to start
successfully when the problem application completes (or fails) its startup
load.

I don't know of any way to lengthen startup time or to control the order of
automatic startup items (doesn't mean it can't be done, just means I don't
recall or know of a way to accomplish this). One thing to try would be
using startup shortcuts in the startup folder instead of auto-startup
options.

I did check the Application Log and as you suggest there was nothing.
If I see any more useful clues I will post again. Oddly enough the
computer has behaved itself all day today! Thanks for your interest.

Thanks Sharon for that tip, but how do I make that change?

Thanks Sharon for that tip, but how do I make that change?

I would make sure that Zone Alarm was updated. Check their website to be
sure you have all updates for your version. Not too easy to change the
startup for this program - it includes a service (True Vector) and you
really want this program running all of the time if you have an always on
internet connection. After the program has been updated, test to see if the
startup behavior is more "smooth" or if it continues to cause trouble.

If there's still trouble...

Look at the other programs that are sporadically not starting. Launch each
one and look for a menu option that controls startup behavior. Change the
setting so that the program does not autostart. Then locate the main
executable file for the program. Create a shortcut to that file. Move the
shortcut into
...\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Start Menu\Programs\ Startup\

Might work. Might not. Certainly worth a try if this continues to be a
problem. If it works, great. However if there's no significant difference,
just delete the shortcuts and re-establish the auto-start settings.
