Time zone changes not sticking

My computer is usually set to Eastern/Standard, but while
I was at a conference I changed it to Central time. Now
that I am back on the East coast I tried changing the
timezone back to Eastern, but it doesn't seem to stick.
What can I do?

Sometimes, it becomes necessary also to reset the clock in bios configuration
for the same time and time zone.
 
A common mistake I've found people to make is to change a
setting and then close the window (using the 'x'). This
cancels any changes made in most cases.
