Judging from the sound, the brakes on HDD's seem to stop them in under 10
seconds. How long do you wait after shutdown of an external drive before
moving it?

Dont need to do anything special, that time is fine.

15-20 seconds.

How about this, how long do you think a guy should wait before turning a
hard drive back on? Do you think its bad for the motor or anything else to
power up the drive before it has fully stopped? This has been on my mind
when I want to restart my xbox. I usually wait until the drive is quiet (5
seconds?) and then power it back up. Considering the things some people do
to drives, which last a LONG time, I figure I should be Ok.

Doesnt matter.

Yeah, you'll be fine.

If I have manual control the I wait for spindown before power on. BUT there
is no harm to not waiting unless you do it a zillion times in a row.
Notably doing that will likely overheat the drive and THAT will cause early
drive death.
