Hello,

One of my client want to restrict the timings of MSN Messenger. Can anyone guide me how to do that so MSN Messenger can be only used during the timings she specify.

Well, don't know if she has a router, but I suppose you could change the port settings to work only during certain times of the day......... (don't know what port MSN runs on.... since I don't use it, but I'm sure it's easy to find). Most routers have a way to restrict by ip and port the time of day that they are open.

IE: Easy for an administrator at say a place of business, that knows no one is using the computers after 5, to shut the ports off, to help ward off hackers.

Thats the easiest way I can think of anyhow. Hope that helps.

Well she is using Router (I guess Buffallo one for telewest...). I am not sure weather it have some port blocking or not. MSN uses port 1865 for communications. I prefer some software to do that if you know of any to restrict any particular program (Could be even just solitaire game..)

If you sniff out a header from the control panel on the router for POST variables you could set a job, cron job perhaps, to automatically send that header to the router to switch that port on and off.

Well your suggestion is quite complicated. I though that there might be some shareware available to control the job. Friend of mine told that MS Plus for Kids have that feature so you can block any program but it is not on timly basis and secondaly it is for Windows 95. I need some program to handle the thing on timely basis and for Win XP.
