Time line slows down and jitters/stops/jitters

After 3 minutes of movie the timeline plays the line no more, it jitters ans
looks like there is no memory. In fact looking at CPU and memory there is
only 15 to 20% in use. So impossible to make a clip longer than 3 minutes. I
work from MPG files. Somebody knows this problem?
 
Convert the mpegs to avi or wmv files which mm works best with and see if
that helps.
