time limits in XP

G

Guest

Hello
I'm wrestling with several third party applications to set a time limit for
use of the PC. Nothing works 100%. My son can't stop playing online games. I
want to give him 3 hours a day to play online.
If anybody has a good suggestion for me, please mail me.

Maybe someone can write a little program that counts the time when the PC is
started and automatic logoff when time is over. ....
Or is this not passible? (I'm no programmer )

Hello DL,
Thanks for your 'helpful' suggestion.
Its also possible to sell the house en get back to a cave in the mountain,
shoot bears en send the wive out for wood for the fire.

The problem is that it isn't his PC but my PC. I use it too.

I hope someone else has a better suggestion.

The problem being that if your son has any technical knowledge its likely he
will overide anything you put on the PC, or if as you say its your PC also,
whatever he tries may render your PC unbootable.

This is a forum Peter, people usually do not respond via email. Check back

Hate to get involved but when I tell my son to do something he does it. I
have brought him up to respect my and others wishes. Tell him to get off
the computer and enforce it. If he doesn't follow your wishes, ban him from
the computer totally and enforce it.

This is more a "parenting" problem than a computer problem. You are the
parent he is the child....you are supposed to be in charge, so take charge.

You could put a password in the BIOS. This way a password would be
needed before the PC would boot. It can be bypassed but not without
opening the case.

No, this is definitely NOT a forum: It's a newsgroup. He may be accessing
this group via a faux-forum connection, but this is not a forum.

But you're right; people don't usually reply to emails here. One should not
even use their real email addresses here since bots continually scan groups
looking for addresses for spam lists. A good one to use is

I think a BIOS password is the weakest possible level of security.
It's good enough to stop a casual passer-by from booting the system,
but useless against anyone who really wants to get in.

Opening the case, and removing the battery for a few minutes (or
setting the appropriate jumper) is trivially easy and takes just a few
minutes.

Besides, many BIOS passwords *can* be bypassed without opening the
case, since there are often backdoor passwords available. There is
also software available to find a BIOS password.

Over and above all that, if he wants to automatically limit his son's
time on the computer, I don't think a BIOS password would meet his
needs, since it would require that he be there at the appropriate time
to power down.

If you don't have one, you could get yourself a router, and password
it, of course. Many allow you to block internet access between
specified times. It would also depend when you use the machine
yourself, i.e. if at regular times. But you could shut it down from
say, 10pm to 9am, as an example.

You are welcome. Lots of people come here to moralize rather than offer
help.
