I have an HP deskjet 920c printer and today I received a
warning message that my black ink cartridge should be
replaced. Should I, in fact, replace/refill it
immediately or can I wait until I notice fading on
anything I print?

If you are doing "quality" print jobs on expensive paper
(photos?) you might want to replace the cartridge. But you
might get a hundred pages from your cartridge before it
starts to fade.

I use the draft mode for all but photo-printing because text
looks just fine and ink use is about three times longer.

HP sells ink, so they will suggest you replace it NOW!
I use ink so I wait till it doesn't print.

The notice that my HP3820 gives says the ink levels are
approximate.
