I am doing a time study and need to enter times
throughout the day in hours and minutes, including past
midnight. Can Excel formatting do that?
In addition, I need to subtract two times to get the
difference then get an average of those times.
Help!!

Entering times in XL like 11:00PM or 23:00 will always be recognised as
times, without formatting. XL will also allow you to add, subtract, etc.

The only issue come if you end up with a negative time. (XL can't work with
this using the 1900 date system) or if your time goes over midnight. For
example, if you have a time of 23:00 and you enter 6:00, meaning the next
day, if you try to do 23:00-6:00, you'll get a negative time and (########).
To overcome this add a 1 to the time after midnight, (a whole number is a
day).

If the summation of the time is likely to be over 24hrs, then you will also
need to custom format the cell as [h]:mm. The [] stop XL incrementing 24
hours to 1 day.
