We have a process monitoring system that reports results
in the format of hr:mm:sec (ie. 543:34:41 which is 543
hours, 34 minutes and 41 seconds). When I import the data
into Excel 2000, it is recognized as text and I can't
manipulate the data for statistical analysis. The same is
true when the data is imported into Minitab (statistical
software). Are there any "tricks" that I could use to
manipulate this time format into a format such as 543.34.
This would facilitate statistical manipulation of this
data. Appreciate the help and advice.

Regards,
Joe

When I brought test data into excel (via File|open) and set that field as
General, excel 2002 (not xl2k) saw it as time.

If I put =a1 in another cell and formatted it as general, I got: 22.64908565.

Are you picking up another character in your import? (like one of those HTML
non-breaking spaces?)

If you've verified that there's nothing extra in the cell, what happens if you
select the whole sheet and do:

Edit|Replace
: (colon)
with
: (colon)

Maybe xl will reevaluate your text as time.
