Time conversation

I am trying to format columns to show time in 24 hr clock.
I thought I formatted it right but when I type in numbers
all I get is 0:00 or 12:00. If I place a ' prior to entry
I get what I typed in but not the : between the numbers.
Any assistance will be appreciated.

You need to type in the : at the appropriate place in your entry, such as
3:45.
 
Regardless of how you pre-format your cells, you have to
key in your times in a format that Excel will recognize
(this means always keying in a ":"). If you precede the
entry with a " ' ", you'll force it as text.

If you're looking for shortcuts to keying in times (such
as leaving out the colon separator), MVP Chip Pearson has
some code on his website you might find useful:
