Tim Berners-Lee (whose parents were both mathematicians on the Manchester Mark 1 project) is the man responsible for the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW). He saw the potential of hypertext coupled with the internet and in August 1991 he created the first ever website, which has been archived here. From this point onwards, the internet and WWW took on a life of their own. Their own huge advancements made progressions in hardware all the more important. It has indeed made the world a smaller, yet more advanced place.
The impact on society? It has united people, made the world a smaller place, made global business quicker and more efficient, opened up whole new markets, encouraged further technological development, the list goes on and on...!
The last I heard of Berners-Lee, he was a part of CERN, which is building or may have built by now, the world's largest particle accelerator (super collider). They ran a Grid computing program through BOINC to help "build" the collider. I was in on the beginning of that project. LHC@Home

Is it true that Mosaic was the first real browser that was widely used by people? Also is it true Tim Berners-Lee didnt want images to be displayed in broswers? something like that anyway.
