TIF & History folders...

I once asked for advice on how to permanently empty the
contents of the TIF & History folders, and I was advised
to go to a page
(http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm) that gives
instructions on how to do it. However, I have been unable
to follow the instructions on the page for two reasons:
1) I cannot delete my TIF & History folders while I am
logged onto my own username, and I cannot access them to
delete them from someone else's. Even when I have made
another user an administrator and made my own user account
a limited one (on Win XP), I am denied access to it.
Also, when I have booted into safe mode and logged on as
the default administrator, I have still been denied access.

Anybody got any ideas to get around this? MY TIF &
History folders aren't a big problem yet, but the size of
both of them continues to grow, and eventually, they will
become a very big problem.

Any help is appreciated, and if more info is needed,
please post here or e-mail me. Thanx

Perhaps you have defined a common TIF for all of your userids?

Another approach would be to do a parallel install of XP
(or use any other OS which could read your primary file system)
and perform the operations on the files and directories in
the other partition.

BTW I have never had to bother going to that length.
Are you sure that it is necessary? The only reason
it may be necessary is if your index.dat file is not resizing.
Otherwise you should be able to completely reinitialize
the TIF (including the index.dat) by simply taking enough
care about how you do it.

Here is a repost of some instructions I gave earlier today
in this newsgroup.

Since you are having trouble don't try to clear it with the usual
Internet Options dialog; do it with Internet Properties and
shut down any programs which might be interfering with the
operation, including OE (msimn.exe) and IE (iexplore.exe).
Temporarily shut down your security programs too since some
are known to interfere with the operation.

Internet Properties == Run... control inetcpl.cpl
Clear TIF == Alt-F,D,Enter

In XP you can doublecheck that the TIF is clear at this point
by opening a command window and entering:
cd /d %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
dir/ad
and verifying that all the subdirectories are gone. If you do an
attrib *
you will see that you have an index.dat and a desktop.ini only.

Actually with a bit of foresight we could simplify and make more
accurate that first command. Before deleting the files open
the View Files... window and copy the location in the Address bar
to your clipboard. Then all you need to do is create the appropriate
cd /d command by pasting that path in and then adding just the
\Content.IE5 part.

If you don't have NTx (my experience) you may find that the index.dat
file size is unchanged. For that case Mike Burgess suggests deleting
the entire folder. Search his posts for delcache for links to more detailed
instructions.

Good luck

Use CacheSentry (by David Pochron).
