Thunderbird newsgroup bug??

Anyone get this problem in version 0.9, or elsewhere:

Whe I reply to an article on a newsgroup, it usually takes me a few
minutes to compose a response. When I press Send, it presents a progress
bar, suggesting that it is trying to connect to my newsserver to post
the response. However, it never seems to actually do it. I have to
cancel the post, close down Thunderbird, and restart it.

I then have to respond to the article again, this time using text that I
pasted from the aborted attempt. Providing the response is quite quick,
the article goes through.

Actually, I think it might be being caused by a wierd interaction with
AVG, the virus scanner. That's unconfirmed, though.

You can disable your AVG long enough to test the situation. To me it sounds
like the socket connection is timing out due to being idle while you're
composing your post and the program is attempting to send the post using
what it had registered as it's latest socket connection. Like the program
is not realizing the socket has disconnected and needs to form a new
connection.

I've disabled AVG, and it seems to fix the problem. I'm thinking of
disabling AVG email scanning, anyway. I doubt that I've ever sent a
virus, and I don't generally go around clickety-clicking any old shit
that lands in my inbox. I'm assuming that Thunderbird doesn't
automatically execute html code found in emails like wot I've heard
Microsoft stuff does.

I'm suppressing my urge to go on a Microsoft rant.

Opera works just fine. I also had problems with Thunderbird, and had to
give it up.

If AVG is bogging it down, can you set a time-out value higher to
compensate?

Actually, I'm now unsure if it really is AVG that's causing the
problems. I've disabled the AVG scan for outgoing emails, but the
problem still seems to recur.

Actually, I've tried XNews and Gravity a short while ago, and couldn't
say that I really liked them. So I just thought I'd try to return to
Thunderbird. Others seem quite keen on it/them, though.

Yeah, I understand. So many choices, so many things people want. In the
end, Opera turned out to do just about everything I wanted. I don't much
like the interface, but I can adjust to just about anything <grin>.
