I know, I'm in the reverse position. I use Local Folders, but I
would like to get rid of the "Templates", "Drafts", "Trash", ...
folders on the individual POP accounts.
Same thing: this isn't possible, but there are feature requests in
Bugzilla for this. So I guess it's only a matter of time... after
all, it's still a non-1.0 product

Actually, it may be possible. I use the Mozilla suite, but perhaps
Thunderbird is similar enough.
Go into your preferences for one of your POP accounts. In the "Copies
and Folders" settings, just select an alternative location for the Sent,
Drafts and Templates folders. This could be in Local Folders or in one
of your other POP accounts. Save the settings, then close Thunderbird.
On restarting it, you should notice that the special icons for those
folders have been replaced by a generic folder icon. At this point, you
can delete the folders and they won't come back. Remember, this works
for me in Mozilla but YMMV. I had thought that there was a way to
redirect the Trash folder, too, but I don't see how now. Maybe I'm
remembering back to NS 4.7.
As I was tinkering with this, I noticed something kinda cool. I'm using
a nightly build of Moz 1.8. Some little quirks here and there, but
generally quite stable for me on XPpro. I found that there's a new
configuration option that essentially collapses accounts. When I
directed my Inbox from POPaccountA to POPaccountB, POPaccountA
essentially disappears from the list of accounts. It's still listed as
an account in my mail configurations, but is invisible. Presumably all
messages to POPaccountA get routed to the Inbox for POPaccountB. If you
have lots of POP accounts and want to check in only one place, this
would do the trick. You could also direct the POP accounts to Local
Folders. Doing this would essentially make all the POP mailboxes
invisible, leaving only Local Folders viewable, and all incoming POP
mail going to Local Folders.
