Thunderbird/Gravity/OE question

I am a member of a private newsgroup for my profession which allows us to
post photographs. I am having a little trouble accomplishing exactly what I
want, no matter which client I have tried. Either they can't do it or I have
been missing something in the config.

Basically, what I want is when I log on to the group to have all the
messages fully downloading in the background so that, as I work through the
list when I click on one with an image I can view it immediately rather than
wait for it to be fetched from the news server. I have tried setting the
group in Tbird for offline viewing but no joy. I have set Gravity to
download and store bodies but that didn't do it, so it seems I might also
need to make some rule so the setting to "Launch viewer when article is
decoded by a rule" gets invoked. I'm not sure how to create the appropriate
rule.

Any help, with the specific options that need to be set to do what I want
are appreciated.

Try news.software.readers

Can do. I posted here first just because:
1. I read this group regularly
2. I know that most here use freeware newsreaders and many are quite
experienced.

Have you tried Xnews?
<http://xnews.newsguy.com/>

It does what you're asking and is _very_ easy to configure.

In OE, this would be accomplished by setting the group's synchronization
to All Messages or New Messages, rather than Headers Only.

Why haven't you tried Dialog ? You can download bodies and headers and
see binaries "inline" with it.

Perhaps he doesn't want to use a newsreader that is in permanent beta?

What's it matter whether it is a beta ? It is far more capable/stable
than many newsreaders that are full releases.

I am not adverse to beta products (for example I use Exact Audio Copy, etc)
but I hadn't heard of Dialog.

I switched from Gravity to Dialog and I'm pretty happy with it.
The only problem is if you accidentally right-click on a
scrollbar, Dialog will freeze until you switch focus to another
application and then return to Dialog. If you don't have an
itchy middle finger (I do) it shouldn't be a problem. ;-)
